Come and explore with us!

Our scouting program seeks the authentic integration of the Catholic FAITH within a FUN outdoor program based on the international scouting movement. The program seeks to accompany young men and women, ages 5-18, on their journey to sainthood and independence through ‘learning by doing.’  These include fun activities, outdoor engagements, the sacraments, prayer, and meaningful experiences that challenge and encourage young people to gain confidence, courage, and enjoy their journey of growth within a structured system. SERVING God and serving their community are integral to the development of their character and allow them the opportunity to share with others the source of their joy.

“Scouting is nothing less than applied Christianity.” Lord Baden-Powell

Faith

According to Saint John of Damascus, “prayer is the raising of one’s mind and heart to God (CCC 2559).” We begin each meeting with a devotional on a topic of our faith, scripture, or a style of prayer. We want our scouts to enjoy a rich sacramental life that’s rooted in the Eucharist and reinforced with personal and communal prayer such as the Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet, and adoration before the Blessed Sacrament.

Fun

“We are not a club or a Sunday School class, but a school of the woods.”Lord Baden-Powell

Our aim is to learn by doing in a fun and safe atmosphere. While having fun we will seek to encourage the building of character, virtue, and patriotism. Our program incorporates opportunities for camping, hiking, and outdoor skills. Occasionally we like to push the limits and soar!

Service

We are called to “serve one another through love (Gal 5:13),” and service is one of the greatest expressions of our faith and love for God. Troop VA1188 has adopted a stream that we cleanup once a year. We also work with our local food pantry and seek other opportunities to serve our community and those that are most vulnerable.

Family Focused

We meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month from 6:30-8pm.

Our Family Scouting program not only allows but encourages the entire family to attend meetings, activities, and adventures; building a stronger and more sustainable community. This strengthens the bonds not only within the families themselves, but also with other members of the community. Our bi-monthly family meetings are gatherings of the full troop (American Heritage Girls and Trail Life) that also include breakout time for our individual units and patrols. We target two family campouts per year and two unit campouts that seek to build community within our troop and within our patrols. Other fun outdoor and service events are planned throughout the year at both the troop and unit level.

Volunteer Run

When you register at least one adult from each family must be registered with AHG/TL and both if you have children in each program. Registration doesnt necessarily require a significant commitment, however providing a quality program for our Scouts is dependent on a commitment from all families. Each family is encouraged to actively participate and prayerfully consider how they can contribute to the success of the Troop. Due to various circumstances, some families may need to volunteer outside of regular meeting times–– that’s okay! We want to find ways for all adults to share their unique gifts and talents with the Troop.
